2º single prize in spot news World Press Photo 2007

I was born in Santa Cruz de la Palma on February 3, 1977. In 1992 I travelled to study photography in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. I attended the IES Cesar Manrique institute and later read photojournalism and digital editing at Universidad de verano de Adeje, La Laguna University. While there I began stringing with EFE, Spain's national news agency.

After that I began to work with Diario de Avisos, then La Opinión de Tenerife, El Día, La Razón, Reuters and The Associated Press where I was their official Canary Islands photographer. Now I work for AP in Madrid.

I have also collaborated with and had work published in Interviú, El País, El Mundo, Tiempo, Time Magazine, the International Herald Tribune, Washington Post, USA Today, Der Spiegel, Paris Match, XL Semanal, Magazine de La Vanguardia and Greenpeace.

Among some of the most moving assignments I have been on I have to include the refugee camps of the Saharawi people in northwest Africa in 1995, 2005 and 2006. I was in Kosovo in 1999 and at camps in Macedonia and the Palestine in 2000.

I have participated in many memorable exhibitions including the Fotonoviembre collective exhibitions of 2001, 2005 and 2006. One of my projects was to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Saharawi destitution, which I did in collaboration with Desireé Martín, AFP (France Presse) Canary Islands official photographer and winner of the 2007 Ortega y Gasset press award. I have also exhibited at the 2007 Epson Fotofestival at Naarden, Holland with a collection entitled "Don't Look Back".

I participated in the Light Africa Up collective ARTIUS exhibition on social justice. Along with 34 photographers from around the world I exhibited on the theme of war, migrations and starvation in an exhibition called "34 visions against oblivion," an event organised by Doctors of the World in Casa Encendida, Madrid.

In 2007 I was awarded two second prizes in the World Press Photo in the categories Spot News single and People in news reportage, as well as the Arganda Solidaria photography award at the Canary Islands carnival in 2002.
